Athlete Spotlight with Altus’ Jax Eichelberger – Presented by Cattlemens Bank

Altus High School sophomore Jax Eichelberger approaches athletics with a simple but demanding standard: show up, work hard, and make every rep count. A multi-sport athlete for the Bulldogs, Eichelberger competes in football, wrestling, powerlifting, and track, carrying the same determined mindset from one season to the next.

For Eichelberger, sports are about more than competition. They are an opportunity to grow through discipline, overcome adversity, and represent a community that has continued to support him.

“What motivates me the most is God waking me up every day to give me a second chance.”

Eichelberger said Altus’ coaches have played an important role in helping him develop both on and off the field. Their expectations and encouragement challenge him to improve daily and hold himself accountable.

“All the coaches motivate me to be a better person than I was yesterday.”

One of the biggest moments of his young football career came during his freshman season. When Altus needed someone to step into a larger role at center, Eichelberger was ready.

“The highlight of my career was last year, my freshman year, when the starting center got hurt, and Coach said, ‘Next man up,’ and it was me, and we had a really good season last year.”

Eichelberger said success is earned through consistent effort, especially when no one is watching. Whether he is preparing for football, wrestling, powerlifting or track, he believes athletes must commit to doing the work every day.

“The dedication and the self-discipline. I always have a mindset that if I want to be the best, you have to try every single day, no half reps, all full reps, because life will break you and tear you down.”

He also appreciates the competition that comes with facing rivals such as Cache, particularly the physical challenge of competing against athletes who push him to improve.

“I enjoy beating Cache. I know we didn’t this year, but I love the dogfight. I like working against Alex ‘AK’ Pacheco. He is always giving good reps, and he always makes my day a little bit better.”

Eichelberger said representing Altus is a privilege he does not take lightly, especially with the support the Bulldogs receive from their community.

“I love my community. They always come out and support, even if it is a bad score. They always show up, and to be a Bulldog is a privilege.”

His perspective is rooted in faith and resilience. Eichelberger hopes others remember that difficult moments do not have to define them.

“Life is not easy. People will try to tear you down, and life will, too. I like to believe that God will take care of you and your problems. Don’t ever doubt when times are tough. Put God first.”
