Altus High School junior Melynn Bush approaches cheerleading with a focus on leadership, hard work and being present for her teammates.
Bush said her role on the squad goes beyond performing at school events. She wants to help create a dependable, encouraging environment for everyone around her.
“My job is to be a good teammate and be there for anyone who needs me. It’s also to lead by example and just be a leader in general.”
That sense of responsibility is rooted in the example set by her parents. Bush said their steady support and guidance motivate her to pursue her goals while staying grounded in her faith.
“My parents inspire me because they always support me and encourage me in anything I do. They teach me to put my faith in God and be the best version of myself.”
Cheerleading has also taught Bush lessons she expects to carry beyond high school. The preparation begins well before the academic year, with practices held Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30, followed by a week of Monday-through-Friday evening practices.
“Being in athletics has taught me how to push myself and work hard towards things. It’s pushed me to not give up when things get hard.”
For Bush, the team’s relationships are among the most meaningful parts of the experience. She described the squad as a second family and said former teammates Audrey and Sydney helped shape the kind of leader she hopes to become. Current teammate Taily also has made an impact through her kindness and leadership.
“It truly feels like I have another family. It’s such a blessing to be able to know I have people to go to for anything, and also just be able to laugh and talk.”
Outside cheerleading, Bush balances school activities with time spent with friends and family. She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as president of her junior Kay Klub. Math is her favorite subject, and she credits teacher Jessica Robinson with making learning enjoyable while emphasizing perseverance.
“She always made class fun and helped me to learn how to work hard.”
In her free time, Bush enjoys simple hometown routines with friends, including trips to Sonic, pickleball and drives around town. Whether she is with family, classmates or teammates, Bush said connection and encouragement remain central to the way she leads.
