Altus High School’s Lyla Bonds – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Cattlemens Bank

Lyla Bonds is quickly establishing herself as a dependable and driven athlete at Altus High School, balancing the demands of both tennis and volleyball while continuing to grow as a competitor and teammate. A sophomore, Bonds already brings valuable experience to the court, competing as an outside hitter, right-side hitter and defensive specialist in volleyball while also contributing in tennis.

Her motivation is rooted in improvement, not just for herself but for the teams she represents now and in the future. That mindset has helped shape her approach to both sports, where she understands that success requires more than natural ability. Bonds emphasizes the importance of extra work beyond practice and maintaining a positive, team-first attitude, traits she has learned by observing the upperclassmen around her. Their example of selflessness and leadership has played a key role in her development.

Bonds made an immediate impact as a freshman, reaching the state level in both volleyball and tennis, an accomplishment that stands as an early highlight in her career. Competing against strong programs like MacArthur has further fueled her competitive edge, as she embraces the challenge of facing top-tier opponents.

In practice, Bonds values the opportunity to compete against her entire team, focusing on reading hitters and setters while learning to identify openings on the court. That well-rounded approach reflects her understanding of the game and her desire to continuously improve in all aspects.

Off the court, Bonds remains just as committed. She is involved in National Honor Society, Kay Klub and her church youth group, balancing her academic and extracurricular responsibilities with determination. Maintaining strong grades is a priority, knowing it allows her to continue playing the sports she loves. She credits Mrs. Bailey as a major influence, appreciating the support and understanding shown to student-athletes managing busy schedules.

For Bonds, representing Altus means more than just performance. It is about carrying herself with a positive attitude and reflecting her school and community in the right way. As she continues her high school career, that combination of work ethic, perspective and commitment positions her as a key contributor with a promising future ahead.
