Altus’ April Adler – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Jackson County Memorial Hospital

For April Adler, teaching science has never been just about chemical equations, Earth systems or preparing students for the next test. It is about building relationships, encouraging curiosity and helping young people discover that they are capable of more than they may initially believe.

Now in her 13th year teaching science at Altus High School, Adler teaches chemistry at every level as well as Earth Science. Her classroom is filled primarily with sophomores and juniors, along with a few seniors, as students work through challenging concepts and gain a stronger understanding of the world around them.

Adler brings a wealth of experience to Altus. Before returning to Oklahoma, she spent 15 years teaching at Royse City High School in the Dallas area. Combined with her time at Altus High School, she has devoted 28 years to teaching high school students.

Originally from southwest Oklahoma, Adler said being back in the area has made her role at Altus especially meaningful. With her family living in Oklahoma, she values the familiar atmosphere and strong sense of connection that comes with living and working in a smaller community.

“I love the small-town feel of Altus, where knowing the people and the area makes me feel like I am a part of something bigger,” Adler said.

That feeling of community began long before Adler became a teacher. Growing up in Snyder, she loved school and developed an appreciation for the educators who helped shape her life. Rather than naming only one teacher who made a difference, Adler credits the many teachers who supported, challenged and encouraged her through the years. Some of those former teachers remain part of her life today.

“Several of my high school teachers still keep in touch with me today, and we even play Words With Friends together,” she said.

Adler also carries with her a practical piece of advice about the teaching profession: “Take care of yourself because no one else will.” It is a reminder that educators give so much of their time and energy to students, families and schools, while also needing to make room for their own health and well-being.

Outside the classroom, Adler enjoys running and watching television. Her dedication to running mirrors the persistence she brings to teaching. She has completed five full marathons, including races in Sacramento, Philadelphia, Bar Harbor and Tulsa twice. She has also finished 39 half marathons, including the Oklahoma City Memorial Half Marathon 11 times.

These days, Adler aims to run three days each week and walk two more. Whether she is guiding students through chemistry, sharing a love of science or logging miles on the road, Adler continues to show the value of consistency, commitment and connection. Altus Public Schools recognized her as Altus High School’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, noting her work teaching chemistry and Earth sciences.
