Hayden Ryleigh Kessler’s soccer career started in California when she was four years old. Her dad decided she should play soccer, telling her, “If you score a goal, I’ll get you a frozen treat.” That simple motivation sparked her love for the game and she has been hooked ever since.
Now a junior at Altus High School, Hayden says growing up as a military child gave her the unique experience of attending many different schools and living in various countries. “While this has been challenging at times, especially when it comes to forming new friendships and relationships, being part of a sports team has made the process much easier.”
The atmosphere of her soccer team creates a family. “While there are times when we don’t see eye-to-eye, we always manage to work through our differences by talking things out. Being part of such a close-knit team fosters a unique bond that can only be truly understood by those who have experienced being part of a sports team,” says Hayden.
The position Hayden plays is striker. “What I enjoy most about soccer is the high-intensity nature of the game and the constant movement it demands. Additionally, I appreciate the connection and energy that the team brings, which enhances the overall experience and makes the game incredibly enjoyable.
“Soccer has instilled in me valuable life skills, such as the importance of humility and effective teamwork. As a forward, I often find myself in situations that highlight my imperfections and remind me of the continuous opportunities for growth. Additionally, playing soccer has enhanced my ability to communicate with a diverse range of personality styles, fostering adaptability and strong interpersonal connections,” said Hayden.
Being a positive representative of AHS is something she takes great pride in. “We’ve faced teams from other high schools that don’t always embody the spirit of good sportsmanship. This has motivated me to lead by example, striving to be a positive role model and a proud ambassador for my school,” she says.
Hayden is inspired by Alex Morgan, who always maintains a positive attitude. “Her optimism motivates me to adopt the same positive mentality in my own life.”
A teammate Hayden looks up to is goalkeeper Claire Beason. “She is an incredible teammate who is always there for me and the rest of the team. She exemplifies great leadership and her positive attitude makes every practice enjoyable, even when we’re running the entire time,” Hayden laughs.
She is thankful to her parents for their unwavering support throughout her soccer journey. “Their encouragement has motivated me to continue growing and thriving. I also want to extend my gratitude to my past coaches, who have nurtured my passion for the sport and helped me develop both as a player and a person.”
Hayden plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine. Her goal is to establish and operate a mobile veterinary clinic, providing accessible care to animals in various communities.
