Marquis Milton is a junior at Altus High School. He has been playing basketball since he was five years old. His favorite part about basketball is the adrenaline rush that he gets when it’s time to get out there and give it his all on the court. The highest moment in his athletic career so far has been winning the Shortgrass MVP in his freshman year of school. It was even better to win this prestigious award because he had the pleasure of being selected in the year that his school was hosting the tournament. He was also selected for third team All-District in his sophomore year of school.
The person who’s made the biggest positive impact on Marquis has been his grandma. He tells us that “she always pushes me to do better in anything I do.” His biggest role model is his older cousin. “He always tries to make me better each day,” Marquis says.
Marquis’s favorite subject in school is math, because he’s pretty good with numbers. Hai favorite teacher is Mrs. Lollis. “I like that she takes time to talk to me after class to explain anything that I need help with,” he says. In his free time, Marquis can be found watching anime or hanging out with his cousins and playing basketball with them.
In Marquis’s opinion, to be a great athlete, you have to be disciplined and willing to get better everyday. Felicity Luckey says “Discipline is the bridge between your athletics goals and your athletics success.” Sports have taught him a lot about himself and about others; but what they’ve taught him the most is never to take anything for granted. We all know, especially in sports, opportunities can be there one minute and gone the next.
After high school, Marquis plans to try to take his basketball career as high as it will go. We may be reading about a future NBA player; watching history in the making. The great thing about making memories is that you’ll have them for the rest of your life. It’s better to look back and think of all the fun you’ve had instead of all the times you’ve worried about things. Marquis’s advice to his fellow athletes is to enjoy every moment.
