This year’s Altus Bulldogs roster is made up with some of southwest Oklahoma’s most talented athletes. “We have an outstanding senior group this year leading us [with] Maci Hayes, Jenna Blackford, Savannah Clothier, Hali Denton and Brooklyn Gambill,” head coach Jessica Robinson said. “We only lose three starters so expectations will continue to be high. We will have some young, exciting talent behind them with freshmen Kyerra Osborn and Maggie Marshall. I expect great things from them. This team has a lot of promise and potential for an exciting year. Juniors McKenzie Harris and Vanessa Vuittonet, who have both started games for us, will contribute.” The Bulldogs open the season at Clinton on Monday, Aug. 12 and at home Thursday, Aug. 22 against the Elgin Owls. Altus will play in the Hobart Tournament (Aug. 15-17), the Elk City Festival (Aug. 19), The USA Softball Festival in Oklahoma City (Aug. 23) and the Duncan Festival (Sep. 5). Its final home game is scheduled for Sep. 26 against Lawton MacArthur. Robinson has big expectations for Hayes (Sr.). “Maci is returning as our district’s pitcher of the year and is a proven force in the circle and at the plate,” Robinson said. “She’s hard-working and a relentless competitor.”  She had similar praise for outfielder Clothier (Sr.). “Savannah is one of the hardest-working people I know,” Robinson said. “She would play anywhere we asked her to and give it 100%. She is also a great leader, always encouraging others and willing to do anything for the team. I can’t say enough good things about her.” Blackford (Sr.) stars on several of Altus’ varsity athletic teams and was a state runner-up in the 5A shot put last year. Her power is a necessary component of the Bulldogs’ game plan. “Jenna is a special athlete — and one that doesn’t come around very often. Not only is she a stellar three-sport athlete, she is an even better person,” Robinson said. “She’s active in different leadership roles at AHS and a two-year captain on the softball team. Jenna is a high-character individual who is admired by her teachers, coaches and teammates.” Kyerra Osborn (Fr.) is an exciting newcomer. The rookie has all the makings to be a special player. “Kyerra is an impressive athlete, and I expect great things from her this season,” Robinson said. “I’m looking for her to make a big impact this season. She’s versatile and could play anywhere.”
