Altus’ Madeline Laxton Athlete Spotlight Presented by Century 21 Altus Prestige

Camaraderie, competition and music all make band a rewarding high school activity. Madeline Laxton, a sophomore at Altus High School is passionate about band. “I love music and the camaraderie experienced among the members,” she says.
Madeline joined band in the sixth grade. She says choosing her instrument took a few adjustments. “I tried multiple instruments including flute, trombone and saxophone, but in the end I settled on trumpet.”
Band has taught Madeline many skills including how to work with people as a team. “My favorite part about being in band are the competitions. I love traveling and performing with my friends and band directors,” she said. Her most memorable recognition to date is receiving second chair in the SWOBDA 9th Grade All Region Band her freshman year.
Madeline is inspired by her parents who are always there for her. She says not only does her mom make the best pretzel breaded chicken but she also gives the best advice. “‘Just play your heart out.’ I was told this right before I was about to perform my solo at a halftime show.”
Madeline’s middle school band director is her favorite teacher. She credits Mrs. Rowe for teaching the necessary music fundamentals. Fellow trumpet player Jocelyn Dennis is also a huge inspiration. “Jocelyn has taught me so much about music and is a great friend,” said Madeline.
When Madeline decided in sixth grade the trumpet was her instrument of choice she began looking up to professional trumpet player, Alison Balsom. “I love to listen to her,” she said.
If she could go anywhere on a vacation she says visiting Paris, France, with her aunt Elaina is her first pick. Whether traveling to her dream location in France or to an area band competition, Madeline is always a proud AHS Bulldog. “Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!” she exclaims.
The best part of playing on the AHS band is getting to represent an organization with so many positive traditions. Madeline is active in her schools writing club, jazz band, and Club Scrub.
