VYPE: What grade are you in, and what sports do you play?
Breyden: I am a senior at Altus High School, where I wrestle.
VYPE: What has your sport taught you that makes you a better person?
Breyden: What my sport has taught me the most is discipline, hard work pays off, leadership, and never giving up. When things are not working your way, you find a way. Doing a little extra after practice can go a long way.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about representing your high school as an athlete?
Breyden: It comes with pride. When it comes to wrestling, I want us to be feared. I want people talking about Altus wrestling. When someone sees an Altus wrestler, I want them to be feared, but there’s also being a good sport, shaking their hand, shaking the coach’s hand, and going on with your day.
VYPE: What accomplishment or memory are you most proud of?
Breyden: What I am most proud of is when I made it to state. I had previously broken my arm three times, so I was unable to wrestle during my freshman and sophomore years. I came back in my junior year and made it to state.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you?
Breyden: Eli Ortiz and Connor Nunez showed me what a leader and a strong team should look like. They pushed everyone to be their greatest every day. Accountability was one big thing I saw when I was sitting on the side; if one person messes up, we all do, that’s what really stuck with me.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade?
Breyden: My favorite teacher is Coach Dabelstein. He has gotten me through a lot. I was struggling in my freshman and sophomore years, and he was by my side the whole way, always reminding me that I would do great in life, no matter the challenges that come my way. I will forever be thankful for Coach Dabs.
VYPE: Who inspires you?
Breyden: Who I am most inspired by is my dad. The things he accomplished are things I would have never thought of. When it comes to the military, he’s done amazing things in the Air Force. Also, when it comes to the sport of running, he will forever be remembered as he is in the Genius Book of World Records. I strive to accomplish great things like my dad.
VYPE: What is your all-time favorite meal?
Breyden: My favorite meal of all time is Belizean rice and beans. When I was in Belize, they gave us a free lunch, and it was rice and beans. Going in, I was thinking, Oh, rice and beans, nothing new. That flavor was something different. The sad part is I can only get it in Belize.
VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
Breyden: I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity, I want to thank my family for always being there through those tough times during wrestling, I want to thank my coaches for always pushing me to be the best I can be especially Coach Torres, him and his dad have been there since day one, pushing me every day, calling me out to pick it up, always pushing me on and off the mat. They have made me a better man.
