Senior Star Sims is a three-sport athlete at Altus High School, competing on the Lady Bulldogs softball, basketball, and track and field teams. Sims plays in the outfield for the Lady Bulldogs softball team. She earned a starting role on the Altus basketball squad this season, playing at the post position. Despite being undersized for her position, Sims nearly averaged double-digit rebounds and was a proven rim protector for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sims throws the discus and shot put on the track and field team. After the cancellation of her junior season, Sims is looking to qualify for the state in both events for the first time. Sims personal record for the discus is 108 feet, while her personal best in the shot put is 30 feet. She’s been placing in the top three for both events in every track meet this season, which is a big reason Sims is confident in performing well at regionals. Sims also learned a lot from a current coach and former teammate, Jordan Benway.

“Jordan was a junior when I was a freshman,” Sims said. “She won state in the shot put two years ago, and I always looked up to her. She’s a coach this year and helps me with drills and teaches me the basics. It’s really helped me to throw farther and achieve new personal bests.”

Outside of athletics, Sims is involved in national honors society, student council, Kay club, and future health professionals. She is also a student mentor for Western Oklahoma State College’s Upward Bound program. Upon graduation, Sims will attend Western in Altus, where she has accepted a position as a school ambassador.

“I will work a part-time job giving tours around campus,” Sims said. “We help host events and clubs to let people know about things happening around the campus.”

Sims plans to major in chemistry and wants to apply for dental school.

“I’ve always liked going to the dentist,” Sims said. “At Upward Bound, we got to job shadow, so I decided to shadow a local dentist. I enjoyed it and became interested in dentistry.”
