Altus High School senior Canyon Bain has his sights set on the state meet and helping his team to a spot on the podium. Head coach Linda Wiginton called Bain a, “strong swimmer, a great team leader and someone who exhibits strong morale character.”
We wanted to get to know this senior better, so we caught up with Bain between practice and homework assignments to learn what makes this senior a great student-athlete at Altus High School.
VYPE: Canyon, when did you first get involved in sports?
Bain: Ever since I was little, I played every sport you could think of. Freshman year however I decided to do swimming because a bunch of people I looked up to we’re doing it and ever since then I’ve been in love with it.
VYPE: What is it about competing that you love?
Bain: Sports is what takes my mind off of all the stress of being a student. Swimming in particular has given me an amazing friend group as well as shown me some amazing life lessons.
VYPE: How involved are you in swimming and what event do you prefer?
Bain: I swim on the highly successful high school team at Altus as well as a USA Swimming Club based out of Edmond called Bison Aquatics. I am primarily a breaststroker.
VYPE: How do you balance school and life?
Bain: Balancing school and sports has been easy for me because I failed so hard at it my freshman year. I did not focus hard enough at all that first semester of high school, and it was a good wake up call to focus more.
VYPE: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?
Bain: My motivation is to just be better than yesterday. As long as I know I’m better than I was the day before I am happy.
VYPE: What does it mean to you to know that people look up to you?
Bain: I love to hear when people look up to me. It makes me strive to be a better person and swimmer and be more polite to everyone.
VYPE: Tell us more about your background. Are you originally from Oklahoma?
Bain: I was born and raised in Altus, Oklahoma, and have lived here my whole life with my parents Michelle and Jantz Bain.
VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Bain: In my free time I enjoy walking my dog Toby, playing video games with my friends, and working out.
VYPE: What are your plans after you graduate?
Bain: After high school I plan on swimming at a four-year university and obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
VYPE: What do you love most about being in the water?
Bain: I love swimming because it is a “get out what you put in” sport which means however hard you work during the season determines how good you do at the end of the season at state championships.
VYPE: Who inspires Canyon Bain?
Bain: I look up to my grandpa Ricky Brewer and my dad Jantz Bain the most. They both are very hardworking, loyal, and respectful men and show me how to live life the right way every day.
VYPE: What is your favorite memory from the pool?
Bain: My favorite sports memory was winning the 200-medley relay at state last year with my good friends Gunner Hammon, Kaleb Shive and Nick Duncan. Like I said before sharing that winning experience is just an amazing feeling and something I will remember for a long time to come.
