Altus’ Hayden Castillo – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Consolidated Bearing of Altus

Hayden Castillo is a multi-sport athlete for Altus High School. The end of volleyball season means it is time to gear up for basketball. Hayden is only a sophomore, but she is passionate about her sports. “It is therapy to me and helps me get my mind off of things,” she says.

Basketball taught Hayden hard work, dedication, discipline, and to trust the process. Coach Greg Gay looks forward to watching Hayden’s progress. “She works as hard as any player that I have ever coached. She is going to be one of the best point guards in the state before she graduates high school,” says coach Greg.

Bonding with teammates on the court, riding to games and overnight hotel stays are the best part of being on a team. She says her best basketball memory is when her team was one game away from making it to the state tournament last year.

The teammate who has had the biggest impact on her is Jenna Blackford. Jenna’s support gives Hayden confidence and pushes her to be a better player.

“My favorite teacher is Mrs. Whinchester from fourth grade because she had a big impact on my life and always made sure I was taken care of,” she says.

Hayden is most inspired by former OU softball player, Grace Lyons. She admires the way Lyons played softball but also how she lives for the Lord. Faith is important to Hayden “The best advice that I have received is to trust in the Lord’s plan and whatever is best for you the Lord will make it happen,” she said.

She is thankful for the blessings in her life. “I would first like to thank the Lord for allowing me to be here today and giving me the opportunity to play the sports I do. I would also like to thank my mom and grandparents for helping raise me and my aunt and uncle for always being there to support me no matter what. Also thank you to the teachers and small group leaders who have impacted my life,” she said.

Hayden is involved in NHS, First Baptist Church, and helps coach her brother’s basketball team. In addition to basketball and volleyball, she runs hurdles and is on the track relay team.
