As Altus High School’s one bag, sophomore golfer Lincoln Stafford has learned that quiet consistency can speak louder than any scoreboard. Long after most players have packed up their clubs, he is often still on the range, methodically working through drills as the sun drops toward the horizon. That extra time showed up in a big way at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond, where he delivered one of the rounds he’ll never forget.
One of his proudest moments came at the Bill Nicklaus Classic, where he fired a 71 and walked away with the win as just a sophomore. For Lincoln, it wasn’t just the number on the scorecard; it was proof that the early mornings, late evenings, and hours of practice were building something real. That day reminded him that patience and trust in his preparation can turn pressure into opportunity.
“Winning the Bill Nicklaus Classic at KickingBird was really special for me,” Lincoln said. “It showed me that when you stay disciplined and trust your preparation, good things can happen.”
Golf has also shaped Lincoln’s mindset far beyond the course. Bad shots are inevitable, but he’s learned not to let one swing define a round, a day, or a week. Instead, he focuses on attitude, effort, and the next shot in front of him.
“Golf has taught me patience, discipline, and how to stay mentally strong.”
In the classroom, Lincoln appreciates teachers who create a calm but challenging environment, like Ms. Adler, who balances clarity with high expectations. On the course, he looks up to professionals like Scottie Scheffler, whose humility and open Christian faith give Lincoln a model for how to compete and carry himself.
“A professional athlete I look up to is Scottie Scheffler because of his character and the way he stays humble despite his success.”
Leadership for Lincoln is less about speeches and more about example. As the 1 bag, he tries to set the tone with his work ethic, his focus, and his respect for others. Representing Altus means playing for his teammates, coaches like Randall Coffman, and a community that takes pride in its athletes.
“My favorite part about representing Altus High School is knowing I’m playing for my school and community, not just myself.”
