Balancing two demanding sports while excelling in the classroom is no small accomplishment, but Samydah Guerrero, a sophomore at Altus High School, does it with drive, humility, and a quiet confidence. Competing in both soccer and cross country, Samydah has already proven that hard work and heart go hand in hand.
Her love for sports comes from within, but much of her strength comes from the people who inspire her most.
“My dad is one of my biggest influences,” she said. “He’s the hardest working and kindest person I know.”
When asked who’s made the biggest impact in her education, Samydah quickly points to a teacher who goes beyond academics.
“Mr. Jaime Reyna has made a big impact because of his perspective on things and how much he cares for his students,” she shared.
For Guerrero, success as an athlete comes down to one crucial element: motivation.
“Without something motivating you, you don’t have anything to achieve,” she said.
That drive helped her reach one of her proudest accomplishments so far.
“Lettering as a freshman for my favorite sport has always been something I’ve wanted to accomplish,” she said. “It meant a lot to me to achieve that goal.”
Success also comes from the people she trains alongside every day.
“I enjoy working with Melissa Fiorrito the most,” Samydah said. “She’s accomplished things in a short amount of time that many others couldn’t.”
And while some players naturally stand in the spotlight, Samydah makes sure to recognize those who quietly shine.
“Charlie A. is really underappreciated,” she said. “She’s a freshman starting varsity goalie, and the amount of stress she’s had to endure while keeping her composure is more than respectable.”
Her favorite social media influencer, motivational speaker Bryce Crawford, continues to strengthen her faith.
“He looks at Christianity from a perspective many can’t, and his testimony helped me in more ways imaginable,” she said.
At the end of the day, representing Altus High School means everything to her.
“It means the most,” Guerrero said. “Having people look up to me is one of my favorite things in life.”
