5A Football Pre-season Tidbits from VYPE

Altus
Altus and Duncan will be in seperate districts and will not play each other for the first time since 1991. The Bulldogs ended a five game losing streak to the Demons last year with a 33-14 win.
Altus and Guthrie are in the same district for the first time since 1983. The teams have played six times in the playoffs since then with Guthrie winning four of the games. Altus won the last machtup 35-14 in 2015.
Carl Albert and Altus are paired in a district for the first time ever. The Titans have won six in a row over the Bulldogs including the 1995 Class 5A state championship. Altus only win against Carl Albert came in 1995.
Bishop Kelley
The Comets cruised through the district schedule with a perfect mark of 7-0. The Comets last finished with a perfect district mark and championship in 2019.
Bishop Kelley takes on Springdale, AR for the first time since 2011. The Bulldogs defeated the Comets 41-17. Springdale finished 2-8 in 2023 competing in Arkansas 7A western division.
Bishop Kelley closes the season at Durant on November 8th. The Comets have won the last 11 meetings with the Lions. Durant’s last win over Bishop Kelley was in 1993.
Bishop McGuinness
Quarterback Damon Chochran threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns and added another on the ground in the Fighting Irish 48-10 win over Shawnee.
The Fighting Irish will face Bishop Lynch from Dallas at the Star in Frisco, TX on September 14th. The Friars finished 3-9 in 2023.
Bishop McGuinness has finished with a winning record 23 straight seasons. It’s the longest current streak in Class 5A. The Irish finished 5-6 in 2000.
Booker T. Washington
The Hornets host Coweta on November 1st. The teams last played in 2005. Booker T. Washington is 6-0 all-time against the Tigers.
Booker T. Washington travel to face the Central Braves on September 13th. The teams last played in 2015 with the Hornets carrying a nine game winning streak in the series. Central last defeated Booker T. in 1982.
Mykah Washington rushed 22 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the Hornets 34-23 loss to Putnam West.
Carl Albert
Wide receiver Trystan Haynes scored on three of his five receptions for 182 yards and interceped a pass in the Titans 49-7 win over Bishop McGuinness.
The Titans pulled even with Jenks winning their 18th state championship in school history. The Titans and the Trojans still remain one behind Ada for the most state championships in Oklahoma history.
The Titans have finished with a winning record in 42 of the last 43 seasons. Their five year win total of 60 is the most in Class 5A. Collinsville is a distant 2nd with 51.
Claremore
The Zebras won their first seven games for the first time since 1979 and hit double figures in wins for the first time since 2012.
Zebras quarterback Brad Hoisington moved in from Oologah. Hoisington threw for 359 yards and six touchdowns against the Zebras last year with Oologah. Claremore came away with the win 62-41.
Tyson Grimett rushed 29 times for 164 yards and a touchdown in the Zebras 21-14 win over Collinsville. It was the Zebras first win over the Cardinals since 2013.
Classen SAS
Quarterback Carlos Hardeman put up 631 yards of total offense and 10 touchdowns in the Comets 69-6 win over Southeast.
Classen won its first three games of the 2023 season. Since combining with Northeast Academy in 2019, its the first time either school had won three striaght to start the season since 2007.
The Comets host Duncan on October 4th. It’s the first game between the teams since 1981. Duncan has won the last three in shutouts. Classen’s last win in the series was in 1945.
Collinsville
Scott Rigby rushed 14 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns in the Cardinals 42-12 win over Thomas Edision.
Quarterback Skyler Moorman threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns in Collinsville’s 47-6 win over Nathan Hale.
Collinsville and Skiatook will not play for the first time in a century. The Highway 20 rivals met for the 101st time last year. Collinsville has won 45 of the last 70 and six in a row.
Coweta
The Tigers host Ft. Smith Northside on September 13th. It’s the first meeting between the teams. The Grizzlies finished 1-9 in 2023 competing in Arkansas’ Class 7A Division.
Coweta faces Booker T. Washington for the first time since 2005 on November 1st. The Tigers will be looking for their first win against Hornets in six tries.
This will be the 55th meeting between Coweta and Wagoner since 1956. Each team has 27 wins with one tie coming in 1956 Wagoner won last year 24-7.
Del City
Del City currently owns a three-game winning streak against Midwest City for the first time in the history of the series.
The Eagles record of 13-1 was the best in school history. It is the most wins in a season since the 1976 Eagles finished with a mark of 12-1.
Quarterback Braylon Lassiter has returned to Del City from Star Spencer where he played last year. Lassiter threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two scores, accounting for all five touchdowns in the Bobcats 34-28 win over Bethel.
Duncan
Quarterback Sawyer Rice threw four touchdown passes, including the game winner with 2 seconds left, to lead the Demons over Ardmore 28-27.
Ardmore and Duncan will not play for the first time since World War II. The Tigers drop to Class 4A and won’t appear on the Demons schedule. Duncan won three of the last four meetings.
Duncan and Bishop McGuinness meet in the regular season for the first time since 1993. The teams have met three times since in the playoffs with the Irish winning two of those games.
Durant
The Lions defeated Broken Bow 20-19 on September 1st. It was the first win against the Savages since 1991 and ended a six-game losing streak in the series.
Durant opens district play against Booker T. Washington on September 27th. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 2005. The Lions are 0-6 all-time against the Hornets.
Durant travels to Gravette, Arkansas on September 13th for a battle of the Lions. Gravette finished 7-5 in 2023 and were eliminated in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
East Central
Wide Receiver Veshion Arps caught 6 passes for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Cardinals 38-27 win over Nathan Hale.
The Cardinals host Booker T. Washington on October 18th for the first time since 2015. East Central is 5-22 against the Hornets with its last win coming in the 2011 Class 5A playoffs.
East Central and Coweta close the season on November 8th. The Tigers have beaten the Cardinals nine straight times. East Central last defeated Coweta 40-33 in 2013.
El Reno
Carl Albert is on the regular season schedule for the first time since 2015. The Indians have lost 18 straight to the Titans last tasting victory in 1999.
El Reno and Noble meet for the 25th time on November 1st. The Indians own a 17-7 advantage over the Bears including last year’s high scoring 68-67 win.
The long running series with Western Heights is back on after a four year hiatus. The Indians have an all-time 32-13 advantage over the Jets and have won 5 straight.
Guthrie
Guthrie travels to Duncan on September 13th. It will be the 26th meeting between the teams with Duncan holding a 13-12 edge. Guthrie has won five games in a row.
The Blue Jays face El Reno for the 41st time on October 11th. Guthrie has won the last four meetings by a combined score of 146-7. The Blue Jays also hold a 21-19 all-time advantage.
Guthrie’s defense was once again incredible. The Blue Jays did not allow a touchdown until the eighth game of the season against Carl Albert and shut out 7 teams on the way to a 10-2 record.
John Marshall
John Marshall hosts Altus on October 11th. It’s the first game between the teams since 2005. The Bears have only defeated Altus once in nine tries, winning 33-30 in the 1995 4A quarterfinals.
The Bears face Guthrie on September 27th for the first time since 2007. John Marshall holds an all-time 8-3 mark against the Blue Jays.
First year head coach Tarrion Adams holds the single game rushing mark at the University of Tulsa, going for 323 yards in 2008 vs. Tulane. Adams is 3rd all-time in rushing yards at TU.
Lawton
Lawton hosts John Marshall on October 3rd for the first time since 1989. The Wolverines have won 3 in a row with the last Bears win coming in 1982.
First year head coach Lorenzo Williams is 4th all-time on the University of Missouri’s sack list with 19 from 2004 to 2007.
El Reno and Lawton play for the first time since 1961. The Wolverines have won the last four over the Indians, all-coming by shutout.
Lawton Mac
The Highlanders take on Bishop McGuinness for the first time since 2005. The series began in 1974 with a 28-0 MacArthur win. Mac is a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Irish.
MacArthur travels to Southeast on November 1st. The series began in 1980 and the Highlanders have won 17 of the 18 games. Southeast’s only win in the series was 1999.
Lawton Mac faces Classen SAS on October 4th. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 1979 when the Highlanders won 55-0.
McAlester
Linebacker Will Spears had a huge game against Broken Bow. Spears made 16 tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack in the Buffaloes 23-13 win.
McAlester and Booker T. Washington will meet for the 11th time and first since 2013 on October 25th. The Buffaloes have lost two in a row to the Hornets with their last win coming in 2011.
The Buffaloes will be looking for revenge against Bishop Kelley on October 17th. The Comets eliminated McAlester from the playoffs in 2023. It will be the 29th game in the series with McAlester holding the edge 20-8.
Memorial
The Chargers face Will Rogers on October 10th for the first time since 2019. Memorial has won seven straight with the last Ropers win coming in 2001.
Memorial last qualified for the postseason in 2015 and the school’s last playoff win was a 7-6 victory over Enid in 1988.
The Chargers travel to Tahlequah on October 17th. Memorial will be looking to break a six game losing streak to the Tigers and their first win in the series since 2005.
Midwest City
Midwest City hosts Duncan on October 17th. The Bombers have won all previous 16 meetings in the series that was first played in the 1952 Class A semifinals.
The Bombers play Southeast for the first time since 1979. Midwest City won the last matchup 36-7 with Southeast’s only victory against the Bombers coming in 1977.
Midwest City and Carl Albert meet for the 7th consecutive year and 13th time overall on September 6th. The Bombers won in 2021 but the Titans have taken five of the last 6.
Nathan Hale
Nathan Hale hosts Daniel Webster to open the season on August 29th. The Rangers have won the last two in the series and four of the last 5 against the Warriors.
Hale will be looking to end a 45-game losing streak against Webster. It will be the Warriors first game since losing to Westville 64-36 to close the 2020 season.
Wide receiver Carmelo Williamson finished 5th in an incredibly tough Class 5A 400 meters in 2023. Williamson recorded a time of 49.28 in the event won by Carl Albert’s Trystan Haynes with a time of 47.24
Newcastle
The Racers host Bishop McGuinness on November 1st. The teams haven’t played since 1987. The Fighting Irish have won the last four in a row.
TJ Bradford rushed 18 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the Racers 46-21 win over Elk City in the first round of the playoffs.
Newcastle opens the season against Bartlesville on August 29th. It’s the first meeting between the teams and the first game ever for Newcastle against a Class 6A opponent in football.
Noble
The Bears travel to Bethany to open the season. It will be the first meeting between the teams since 1971, when the Bears defeated the Bronchos 46-18.
Carl Albert plays Noble for the first time since 2011. The Titans have won all 20 meetings with the Bears, including the last three by a combined margin of 154-0.
Bryson Carey finished with 169 yards receiving and three touchdown catches in the Bears wild 68-67 loss to El Reno.
Pryor
The Tigers open the season at Sallisaw. The teams haven’t played since 2002. The Tigers will be looking to even the series that began in 1982 at five wins a side.
Pryor bounced back from a 72-7 loss to Grove in 2022, with a 46-7 win over the Ridgerunners in 2023. Both margins were the largest wins for each side in the series.
Braden Ward completed 15 of 26 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns while Brock Ward hauled in five of those passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Grove.
Shawnee
Deetrick Beavers rushed 13 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns in the Wolves 37-0 win over John Marshall.
The Wolves travel to Duncan on September 20th. Shawnee has beaten the Demons six games in a row. Their last loss in the series came in 2004.
The shutout victory over John Marshall was the first for the Wolves since blanking Thomas Edison 21-0 in 2017, a span of 59 games.
Southeast
Running back Junior Bonilla ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries to leas the Spartans to a 38-12 win over US Grant.
Newcastle is on the Spartans schedule for the first time since 1997 on November 8th. The Racers won both all-time meetings including 30-0 in 1997.
The Spartans will be looking to bounceback from a 69-7 loss to Classen SAS in 2023 on October 11th. Southeast had won 12 in a row in the series.
Tahlequah
Wide receiver Beckett Robinson caught 7 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers 41-38 season opening loss to Sapulpa.
Quarterback Cash McAlvain completed 17 of 26 passes for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns in Tahlequah’s 24-21 win over Booker T. Washington.
The Tigers 24-21 win over Booker T. Washington was the first ever against the Hornets. Tahlequah had lost the three previous meeings.
Edison
The Eagles will be looking to win their fifth in a row over Durant on October 11th. It will be the 16th all-time meeting with Durant holding a 9-6 edge in the series.
East Central returns to the schedule after a two-year absence. The Eagles won the last meeting 32-26 and have emerged victorious in five of the last six games.
Thomas Edison hosts Shawnee on October 24th. It’s the first matchup between the teams since 2020. The Eagles will be looking for their first win against the Wolves since 1999.
Western Heights
Quarterback Allen Thompson was responsible for 467 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in the Jets 42-40 win over Hinton, ending a 24-game losing streak.
Altus and Western Heights will meet for the 20th time on October 4th. The Bulldogs have won six straight in the series, with the Jets last winning 37-15 in 2007.
The Jets will be looking for their first win against Guthrie since 2000. The Blue Jays have won 10 straight in the series by a combined margin of 528-41.
Will Rogers
Will Rogers and East Central meet for the 7th consecutive season on September 20th. The Ropers are currently riding a three-game winning streak against the Cardinals.
Will Rogers last won a playoff game in 1973. The Ropers advanced past Putnam West on penetrations after a 13-13 tie in the Class 4A quarterfinals.
The Ropers travel to Ponca City on September 13th. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 1991. The Wildcats defeated the Ropers 35-12.
