Altus’ Francie Clinton – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Jackson County Memorial Hospital

Francie Clinton is in her seventh year as a library media specialist and technology coach at Altus High School.

“If you would have told me in high school that I would be a teacher, I would have laughed at you,” Clinton admits. “I started substitute teaching at Tipton and fell in love with it. I had young children and knew that teaching would provide a steady income for me. It all began subbing.”

Clinton’s teaching career has gone through several schools in southwestern Oklahoma. She and her husband, Mark, have three children and nine grandchildren. Her love for education has persisted through tenures at Tipton, the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center, Davidson Elementary, Rivers Elementary and Sunset/AES Elementary

“I love my kids,” Clinton said. “Our library is a safe, comfortable place for them to hang out. They play chess, read, study or just chill with their friends. I enjoy getting to know what they are interested in.”

Clinton was inspired by her own teachers to enter the profession.

“Mrs. Calloway, my third grade teacher, enhanced my love of reading. My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Frieiling, gave me a strong interest in science. Peggy Meyers, my junior high band director, showed me that girls could excel in music and pushed me to become the best I could be.”

Clinton’s best advice for young teachers: “Take time for yourself.”

“You can’t pour from an empty cup,” Clinton said. “I love to read, vegetable gardening, sewing, watching wheat grow and spending time with my family.”

That same Francie that never though she would teach now reveres the life she’s made in education.

“You will never find a more rewarding career. Teaching isn’t a job; It is a passion and grows throughout the years. I have been blessed with many wonderful memories and met so many amazing young people.”
