Altus’ Jordyn Huckins – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Herring Bank

High school student-athletes have to balance their school work along with their sport. They have to be prepared to compete on game day, but they also have to keep their grades up so they can be eligible to participate. Jordyn Huckins says that along with the hard work, she has people around her to help her be a better athlete and student.

“Savannah Clothier, Keeley Brown, Claire Beason, and Hayden Castillo are all role models that I look up to,” she said. “And also my teacher, Mrs. Latham, had the biggest impact on my life. She was my eighth-grade reading teacher, and was always there for me and made sure to help me whenever I needed her.”

Jordyn is a freshman at Altus High School, where she is a part of the volleyball and track teams. She is also involved in the National Junior Honor Society, the First Baptist Church Altus youth group, and the Great Plains Volleyball Club.

Altus High School track coach, Robert Garrison, says that Jordyn is a great all-around athlete and teammate.

“Jordyn is just a great person and athlete,” Garrison said. “She has a great attitude about everything. Her sense of humor is awesome but she can get serious just as quick. In the classroom, she is very focused on her studies and maintains a high GPA. Outside of the school, Jordyn has fun but also knows how to act. She is a great role model for younger girls to look up to because of her work ethic and her all-around attitude about life.”

When game day rolls around, Huckins and her team are always ready to compete against whoever is on the schedule, but she does have some opponents that she enjoys facing a little more.
“I enjoy competing against bigger schools that are a bigger challenge for me because it makes me and the team better.”

Jordyn also has a couple of shoutouts to throw out to two special coaches.

“I just want to thank Coach Garrison for believing in me and always pushing me to my limits,” she said. “I also thank Coach Daniels for helping me with volleyball, I wouldn’t be where I am today in volleyball if it weren’t for her teaching me my approach.”
