Altus’ Calista Pavelschak Pom Spotlight Presented by Cirque Dance Studio

Calista Pavelschak, a student at Altus High School, is not just a passionate pom dancer but
also an aspiring leader.

Calista’s pom career was graced by two remarkable coaches, Rainey Palmer and Lisa
Hunter. “They both helped me grow as a leader on the team and always pushed us to do our
best every day,” she said.

In all sports, teammates are like family, and Calista has been fortunate to have a
remarkable teammate, Gracen Hawthorne, by her side. “I deeply admire her work ethic and
attitude,” Calista said. “She makes all practices and games so much fun, and I’m so glad I’ve
had the opportunity to dance alongside her these past four years.”

Outside of dance, teachers often leave a significant impact on their students. For Calista,
Jessica Robinson has been that special teacher who has influenced her life. “She formed a
genuine connection with me, and I can trust her and confide in her anytime I need to,”
Calista said. “She always makes me laugh and cheers me up if I’m ever having a bad day.”
Preparation for the pom season requires dedication and continuous effort. Calista keeps
her skills and technique in check by attending studio dance classes during the off-season.
Calista recognizes the life lessons she has learned through pom: “Pom has taught me how to
be a leader. Especially this year with being one of the only four-year members, I’ve had to
step up into that position. It’s made me become a better leader and mentor to the younger
girls.”

As she looks ahead to her senior year, Calista’s goals are focused on making it to the state
competition once more.
The matchup that excites her the most this season is the senior night football game. It’s a
moment filled with emotions and a chance to celebrate the journey with her teammates.
Beyond high school, Calista aspires to attend either Oklahoma State University or Kansas
State University, majoring in communications.
