When someone makes the decision to become an educator, they know that it will become more than just a job. Katie Brewer, who is a counselor at Altus High School, says that being able to see the kids flourish in life is something that never gets old.

“I love seeing the students succeed and reach their goals,” she said. “I love being a part of that.”

Brewer has been in her position at Altus for three years. Before that, she worked in various positions at Western Oklahoma State College for eleven years. She still does some adjunct teaching for WOSC.

The decision to become an educator was an easy one for Katie and she says that having impactful teachers in her life as a student made it even easier.

“God made it very clear that I can be a light for students in a public school setting,” she said. “Two teachers that were influential in my life were Mrs. Wycoff and Mrs. Staton.

They pushed me to be better and loved me when I needed it most.”

During her time in the education system, Brewer has been given different pieces of advice. But she says that there is one that has really stuck with her.

“The best advice I have been given is to meet students where they are,” she said. “We don’t know what they go through outside of these halls, so meeting them where they are at mentally and helping them reach their personal goals is key.”

When she is not at school, Brewer enjoys spending time with her husband, Josh, and their two children, Shyanne and Lynnden.

“Whether that be going to pig shows or baseball tournaments or hanging out at the house, wherever they are, I’m happy.”

Katie is also an active member of Martha Road Baptist Church.
