Altus High School football head coach Jeremy Reed took the program’s reins earlier this spring, but he can hardly be counted as new.
Reed coached the Bulldogs from 2014-15 and led the team to a Class 5A state championship in 2015, its most recent title. He then took his talents to Yukon, where he spent four seasons and compiled a 20-21 record. In 2020, Reed led the Millers to their first playoff appearance since 2013.
Reed most recently served as offensive coordinator and assistant athletic director at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas from 2021-22.
VYPE Magazine caught up with Reed for an exclusive interview on his return to southwest Oklahoma.
VYPE: Who and what went into your decision to return to Altus, where you won a state championship in 2015?
Jeremy Reed: My family was a big reason. I felt like it was time that I stopped climbing the career ladder and find a place to let my kids enjoy school and have a great high school experience.
VYPE: What are some things that have changed since you were last at AHS?
JR: It’s been a rough stretch in football so the energy and thoughts toward football are different.
VYPE: What has stayed the same?
JR: The people! Great people who love the school system and love the Bulldogs.
VYPE: How much support have you received from the community, alumni, faculty and parents?
JR: The support has been unreal. It feels like I just went on a long vacation and came back.
VYPE: What’s the mission now?
JR: To give coaches, players and community hope again. Has been really tough recently, hopefully we can restore excitement.
VYPE: What is it going to take for Altus football to return to its former dominance?
JR: Consistency and commitment. Winning is hard. It takes great sacrifice and commitment. It will be a process but the support and desire is there to return to being competitive.
VYPE: Who are some of the players that have peaked your interest so far this offseason?
JR: We have had a great spring. Many players have stood out, too many to name.
VYPE: Which teams are you most looking forward to playing this year?
JR: I have always been about the next opponent, don’t look ahead. We have to have major focus on ourselves to be the best we can be.
VYPE: This season will be a success if __________?
JR Bulldog Pride is back. Not a better place to be than a full house at “The Rock” on a Friday night. I hope our team gives the community a reason to pack the house each week.
VYPE: What’s a food joint everybody has to try in Altus?
JR: Huge fan of Pick Up Taco, great food!
